The Environmental Promoters Program is a partnership with housing residents, Home Forward, Metro, and local governments.  We work with interested residents across different multifamily sites in the Metro region with the mutually agreed upon goals of improving recycling, waste reduction, green cleaning and hazardous waste reduction opportunities on their housing sites. This program is flexible and community driven, and provides the opportunity for participants to gain leadership and paid training and job experience.

To date, this program has supported residents in:

  • Improving overall recycling and waste reduction systems on multifamily housing sites

  • Improving recycling in community rooms

  • Leading projects related to waste prevention, such as clothing swaps, garage sales, and food waste prevention projects

  • Facilitating workshops related to recycling and green cleaning

  • Handing out educational resources related to waste prevention, recycling, and healthy homes.

  • Connections to careers in waste reduction and recycling

Since this program started in 2019, the Environmental Promoters have reached over 800 community members.

Blanca is interested in being an Environmental Promoter so she can teach the community around her to take care of our natural resources. We are so thrilled to have Blanca on board!

Spencer is interested in this opportunity because he says it's nice to be part of a team that takes action to save the environment, instead of just talking about it. Outside of Trash for Peace, he is passionate about wheelchair sports. We are so happy to have him on the team!

Brittany has a four-year-old and wanted to be part of something that would extend the life of our planet so her daughter has a chance at a good life. She also hopes to educate people on the dangerous effects of toxic chemicals and fragrances to help enhance the health of her community!

Robin believes in the power that a community holds when they come together. She wants to help make her neighborhood a better place, one day at a time, by working with her neighbors to create and carry out a plan to improve our shared and individual impact on the environment and promote sustainability.

Maya is a student who wants to learn how to help make the earth greener. Through this position, she hopes to gain greater knowledge on how we can help each other have a better future!

Toney not only helps lead Urban Gleaners programs every week, but is a tireless advocate for her community’s needs. She also is an artist, especially with pen and ink! We are so lucky to work with her!

One of our Environmental Promoters AND Community Based Master Recycler graduates, Tory is a reuse expert! She creates endless art out of reclaimed materials and also helps run the Urban Gleaners Program in her community!

"Lo que me emociona del programa es que estoy aprendiendo como reciclar las cosas que yo tiraba a la basura."

Miriam has learned through the program how to recycle items that she used to throw away. For fun, she likes to spend time with family and watch her son play soccer!
